What are Anti-Drone Systems? An Overview of Drone Detection Technologies in Use in Thailand

As drones get cheaper and fly farther every year, the risk of illegal use — spying, flying near airports, or entering security-restricted areas — grows right along with it. Anti-Drone (Counter-UAS) Systems are a group of technologies developed to “detect” and “respond to” unwanted drones before they cause damage.

What Is Anti-Drone, and How Does It Differ From Shooting a Drone Down?

Many people assume “anti-drone” means shooting a drone out of the sky, but in practice, most legally usable Counter-UAS systems are divided into 2 clearly separate stages:

  • Detection Stage — Identify the position, direction, and model of a drone entering the area before deciding how to respond.
  • Mitigation/Jamming Stage — Cut the drone's control or video signal to force it to land or return to its launch point (using this stage in Thailand is subject to specific legal requirements, applicable especially to agencies with legal authority).

For the private sector — airports, factories, or important event venues — aDetectionis the most essential starting point, since it provides advance warning before an incident occurs and gives data that relevant authorities can act on promptly.

Drone Detection Technologies in Use Today

1. RF (Radio Frequency) Signal Detectors

Detects the radio waves drones use to communicate with their remote controls, covering a wide frequency range from 100MHz to 6GHz — which covers most commercial and FPV drones on the market. Well suited for fixed installation points, such as an airport perimeter fence or event venue.

2. TDOA+AOA Detectors (Position and Direction Finding)

A more advanced technology than general signal detection, using the principle of Time Difference of Arrival together with Angle of Arrival to pinpointthe actual location of both the drone and its pilot — not just a rough direction. Well suited for high-level security work that needs to precisely identify a drone's pilot.

3. Drone Surveillance Radar

Detects small, slow-moving objects that conventional radar often misses. Works day or night and in unfavorable weather. Well suited for large open areas such as airports, military zones, or power plants.

4. DJI Aeroscope — Detects DJI Drones Specifically

Since DJI drones hold the largest market share in Thailand, the Aeroscope system is designed to intercept signals specific to the DJI protocol, revealing model, serial number, drone position, and pilot location in real time. It's widely used by security agencies and airports around the world.

Who Should Have an Anti-Drone System Installed?

  • Airports and Aviation Areas — Prevent drones from entering no-fly zones where they risk colliding with aircraft
  • Industrial Factories and Warehouses — Prevent spying on production data or assets
  • Large Event Venues — Prevent drones from disrupting attendee safety
  • Prisons and Security Agencies — Prevent drones from being used to smuggle contraband
  • Private Residences and Resorts — Prevent privacy violations

Legal Considerations Before Installing an Anti-Drone System

ProgramsDetectionDrone detection is generally permitted for site security purposes, butjamming or cutting the signal falls under radio communication law and may require permission from relevant authorities before use. If you're unsure whether a given system installation requires permission, we recommend consulting an expert before deciding — see more details at Drone Laws in Thailand
