Expert Opinions on the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation – Challenges and Responses to Emerging Threats

The situation involving drones entering the Thai-Cambodian border areas, particularly in Ubon Ratchathani and Buriram, has raised serious national security concerns, as it signals a new kind of threat emerging from modern technology. In the latter part of the report, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology experts provided in-depth insights, stating that most of the drones observed in the area are likely reconnaissance drones used for surveillance and gathering information on strategic points or movements on the Thai side. They are not yet kamikaze or direct-attack drones. Although no actual attacks have been seen so far, this does not indicate safety—because reconnaissance drones have high potential to transmit data that could enable the adversary to identify targets and launch precise attacks in the future.

Experts warn that allowing reconnaissance drones to operate in border areas poses a silent threat that could lead to serious long-term damage. Therefore, it is essential for Thailand to enhance its defense measures—particularly by developing domestic “anti-drone” technologies and counter-drone systems rather than relying on imported or commercially available technologies. Detection and control equipment from major foreign manufacturers carries a high risk of being hacked, having their codes exposed to adversaries, and potentially allowing enemies to easily pinpoint Thai drone operators. Experts emphasize that creating “homegrown, self-used” innovations will reduce national security risks and improve the country’s ability to respond effectively to emerging threats.

In addition, there has been discussion of a frightening future threat: the “kamikaze drone” or suicide drone. Although Thailand has not yet encountered their direct use, close attention is required, as on the global stage—particularly in the Russia-Ukraine war—these drones have been developed for speed, precision, and the ability to carry weapons and severely strike strategic targets. Above all, experts point out that Thailand’s path to survival in the era of “technological warfare” lies in urgently developing its own modern systems for drone detection and interception, closing potential vulnerabilities, reducing dependence on foreign sources, and advancing both personnel and strategic thinking to keep pace with continuously evolving threats.

Experts reaffirm that Thailand must remain vigilant against new forms of threats posed by drones. Even though no actual attacks have occurred yet, complacency is not an option. Only by developing defense technologies created by Thais and strengthening domestic capabilities can the country sustainably respond to and preserve national security in an era where warfare is being reshaped by technology.
